Fibromyalgia Self Treatment

Fibromyalgia is a difficult disease to manage, but at home care is critical to successful treatment.

Managing stress is one of the most significant self treatments, as it is a controllable symptom. Taking steps to avoid emotional stress and over exertion can help reduce fatigue and keep other symptoms, such as muscle pain,  from flaring up. Some stress managing techniques include daily relaxation, meditation, maintaining a diary, and exercise.

Additionally, patients need to take care to maintain a healthy sleep pattern. Though poor sleep, such as lack of stage 4 deep sleep and sleep apnea is thought to be a risk factor for fibromyalgia, patients that already suffer from the illness should make sure to get enough sleep to manage fatigue. Daytime napping is discouraged.

Maintaining or adopting a healthy lifestyle can also help treat symptoms.  A healthy diet, regular exercise, and low caffeine intake are all recommended.
