Fibromyalgia is a complicated disease that has many symptoms and manifests itself differently in most sufferers. It is difficult to diagnose, difficult to treat and there is no one one cause though stress, diet, genetics, chemical imbalance and lack of deep sleep are among some of the common causes. No one knows exactly what causes it but several risk factors for fibromyalgia have been identified.
First, gender and age are significant factors. More women than men are afflicted with the illness, especially women in their mid 30’s to their mid 50’s, though it does occur in children and older adults.
Though fibromyalgia is not exactly hereditary, you are more likely to have it if a relative also suffers from the illness. Additionally, people who experience disturbed sleep patterns such as sleep apnea and nighttime muscle spasms often have fibromyalgia.
You are also at risk to develop fybromyalgia if you suffer from a previous condition such as arthritis or lupus.
